Iceland day 2 part 2

After lunch we hit the waterfalls. Here’s Gullfoss. It’s a 2 part fall. The first, 30 meters...

And the second part, 70 meters. It spills sideways into a narrow canyon. Really a wow, wow, wow waterfall! George says it’s better than Niagra Falls!

Here’s a crater lake called Kerid. It really is this color!

More waterfalls, cause now we’re in the area of the island where there are immense glaciers. This one is Seljalandsfoss. It’s possible to walk behind this one, but that didn’t look appetizing to us since it’s kind of cool out.

And, just as it starts to drizzle, one of the largest waterfalls on the island, Skogafoss. It thunders! You can see the scale by looking at the tiny people that are closer to it! The mountain that the water in both of these are from is the one that erupted in 2010 and stopped air travel in Europe. Reykjavík, however, was unaffected since it’s upwind!

We’re so close to these major mountains! Here’s an arm of a glacier from Katla!

And, finally, we reach our hotel. I wasn’t sure how these rural places would be...but it’s great! George’s comment...’real estate must be cheaper out here!’ It’s by far the largest room we’be had, and the view...well, it overlooks the two last areas we went to see today after checking in. One was a puffin colony, which was closed for the day,

And the other part of our view is this!

So, a great day. We were both incredibly wow’d by the beauty here. The elemental dynamics of this island are so...alive! Everything is so young, so volcanic! It occured to me that the volcano that we are staying in the shadow of tonight, who’s eruption cycle is overdue, could in fact go off anytime. Everything also seems so BIG! The vast stretches of land, punctuated by these amazing sights, are really stunning. And everywhere...lupine, in full bloom!
