Iceland day 2: Reykjavík to the South Coast

We learned a very Icelandic word today... Gluggavedur ( the d is pronounced th). It literally means ‘window weather’. It’s when you look out of the window and it looks REALLY nice out...then you step outside and grab a few layers after all. Bright and sunny...but cold and/or windy. We also learned, as you’ll see in poctures today, that everything from short sleeves to winterwear can be used in the same day.
With that in mind, we headed out. The first stop is Thingvellir Park, where the tectonic plates of Euroasia and the Americas that go right across Iceland are slowly pulling apart...about 2cm per year! Maybe in a few millennium Iceland will be 2 islands?!

Our next stop, is the Great Geysir erea. The Geyser named Geysir used to blow regularly, but as a result of past vulcanic activity it isn’t predictable any longer. This ‘Geysir’, however, is where we got our term Geyser from! The prize for regularity now goes to a geyser named Strokkur. We watched 3 eruptions, each completely different!

After the geyser area, we stopped for lunch at a place Rick Steve recommends in his Iceland book, which we use to supplement our tour. He once again has nailed it! And, at this point the weather is so good we move outside and shed all outer layers. I can hardly believe how warm it is!

And look who was in the parking lot! These Icelandic horses are everywhere. They’re smaller, tougher, and...if observation is any indicator, they’re livelier than their larger cousins!

Since I’m thinking the wifi will be slow out here, I’ll spit today...stay tuned.
