Iceland day 5: Northern sub-arctic!

So you can get perspective of our day, more or less. We’re definitely North now! You can also see how big the glaciers are...10% of Iceland!

It seems every time we turn a corner, there is a new type of scenery. Today there’s lots and lots of lava, which makes sense...we’re headed for another area of geothermal activity. So, mile after mile after mile after mile od this!

Until we got to Dettifoss waterfall, which has the most water volume of any waterfall in Europe! 500 cubic meters per second! It’s 45 meters high and 100 meters wide! The spray is intense! It kicks up, then comes at us as snow! Given that it’s 3 degrees C, and the infernal wind, we layered up...and we’re completely comfortable!

Here’s another one a short walk away, Hafraglifoss. It’s also beautiful!

Now we’coming to the geothermal area...which we smell from miles away!!! This is Hverarond hot spring area. Lots of fumeroles, mud pools, mud pots, and other boiling, smelly things!

This one was like a blast furnace! It was loud and put out LOTS of steam and energy!

Right up the hill was the Krafla Geothermal Power Plant. We went to a visitors center and learned a LOT about power production in Iceland. About 30% comes from geothermal, and 70% from hydroelectric. Here’s the outlet at the geothermal plant. It provides electricity and hot water heating.

After we checked into our hotel,

which is a place very close to Lake Myvatn, we head out again...but that’ll be a separate post, as it’s simply too much to comprehend...and we’re not quite done living it yet! Kyle, stay tuned!!
