These Danes practically live on their bikes. Who needs fancy bike clothes!
Since we are in a country where consensus reigns, we put the naming of our new companion to a vote. So, I bring you...Ulf!
Apparently this is a typical Viking name, and means ‘wolf’. It was also the name of our host in Stockholm!
So, we had to take him to reacquaint him with his heritage at the Viking museum.
4 Viking ships were found and reserected here. They now build new ones with the patern from these and study them by sailing them. The faster, more narrow ones could sail up to 15 knotts! The ships more made for cargo a mear 5 knotts. They were built to plane, so were light, without ballast. They all had sails and oars.
From around 900 to 1100 the sight of these ships, the the bowsprit of a dragon, struck fear everywhere they landed. They consolidated power in an area that previously was entirely scattered, but eventually were overcome by superior powers. They didn’t have horns, though. They did spread Christianity.
Ulf is SO happy here!
He’s definitely feeling it!
After all the conquering, it’s time to eat like a Viking!
Then, we’re off to the Roskilde Cathedral.
It’s beautiful, but mainly known for being the place where the sercouohogus of the royalty of Denmark are. The current queen even has hers here, waiting. Is that creepy?
In Oregon, we keep hearing we’re among the least churchgoing in the country. Well, Denmark and Sweden have us beat in spades. It’s odd...their system of taking care of each other is so biblical, yet they are so completely not churchgoing. They support churches with voluntary taxes, they just don’t go. One of our guides say most Danes go 5 times...When they are baptised, when they are confirmed, when they are married, when they are married again (50% divorce rate), and finally when they die.
So, here we found a small chapel that seats about 30 people.
George looked for the sound booth,
But it turned out to be a small organ.
There is a Bible, a New Testament,
and a prayer request book. It didn’t have many prayers, seemed like more of a guest book, so I added one that has been on my heart for this entire trip.
It’s just so striking to be in a country that holds such Christian values but doesn’t know the author of those values!
And now, back to our bus, to head to a boat that will take us to our vacation from our vacation. It’ll be a break in the RS march, on a little island called Aero. Many of us have stated how welcome this stop is!
Along the way, I keep seeing houses that look very similar to our house on the exterior. I haven’t managed to get a shot of one, but hope to. I didn’t see them in Sweden, but suddenly they’re everywhere here. I’m pretty sure the gal we bought our house from is from Scandinavia (last name Bergren), and she designed in this style! I even remember seeing something of hers that was from one of these Scandinavian countries, just don’t remember which one.
